The Lotus XIX gets the feature in this issue. There is a lot of very interesting Formula Junior information and the upcoming 1.5 liter F1 formula.

Interesting to Me
I particularly enjoyed the Carrera Ciudad De Mexico article (since this is the Mexico Grand Prix weekend) and all the Formula Junior content that went with it. The prize purse for this event was $20,000, which drew a lot of entrants from across the border despite the challenges that meant. This race was run at the same location as the current day grand prix track. Appropriately, Ricardo Rodriguez walked the international field and gave the home fans a nearly perfect race result with Pedro Rodrigues coming in 3rd behind American Jim Hall.

As for the Lotus XIX, I learned a lot about it that I did not know before, especially about how it was received at the time. It is illuminating to look at these cars within the context of the days when they were new and groundbreaking.

I was surprised to see just how much the Formula Junior class occupied the attentions of the Sports Car Graphic staff. For some reason I have always thought of it as an amateur series, if at a high level. However, given the context of 1961 it makes sense. The next F1 season would be the first of the 1500 cc formula and the chassis of a Formula Junior and an F1 car would be nearly identical. A good showing in FJ, either by a driver or a car, could indicate potential for success in F1 next season.
Bernard Cahier, a name I know well because of his instantly recognizable motorsports photography, dives deep into predictions for the 1961 season.
